I Fear Internet People

The first round of press is out for Incredipede and people are reacting really positively! The trailer made it to Reddit’s front page and I’m super excited about that! The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive and I’ve gotten a bunch of very friendly emails. In short: things are going great! But here’s the thing: even though things are going great a fear lurks in the back of my mind. I fear Internet people.

When I made Fantastic Contraption there was a big positive ruckus of people. It was amazing and wonderful. But for the life of me I couldn’t bring myself to engage with it. There’s something about the weight of hundreds of people (virtual or not) that threatens to smother me. So for Fantastic Contraption I hired my good friend Andy Moore to talk to people for me. He did a great job but he’s moved on to writing his own games now.

This time around I am determined to not run from the challenge. I will try really hard to respond to everyone’s comments, put myself out there and talk about the game. That’s a big reason that this blog exists in the first place.

So, here we go. The rollercoaster begins!

  1. You have good reason to fear the denizens of the internet, for as surely as they can praise and raise your work on a pedestal, they can smash down the pillar and your confidence with the might of their “Criticism.”

When even the most well reasoned criticism can you put you down and make you feel less inclined to work, its hazardous to expose yourself to the internet where people can be quite hateful for very little.

Luckily you seem like you can handle it. I am sure your game will do well and will be critically acclaimed. Just remember that no matter what, you will have detractors. Just don’t let them get to you, and keep on working.

I theorize one of the most difficult aspects of having a community centered around a game, is organizing the good feedback from the bad. Even positive feedback can be the wrong type of feedback depending on what is said.

  2. I saw a similar game, but it was about building robots and making it to the exit, they gave you different pieces and you had to make it work. It was extremely complicated I wasnt able to complete level 2.
¿Have you played it? I think you can find it on ArmrGms.

Sorry if my english is not good.

        1. This is exactly the kind of thing I shouldn’t respond to right?

If someone is going to argue that Incredipede is a clone of Incredibots then they clearly have no idea what they’re talking about and aren’t worth engaging with.

The _name_ however is simmilar and I actually got permission from the Incredibots guys to use Incredipede.

  3. That most popular comment in the screenshot? My sentiments exactly. I never could make Fantastic Contraption work the way it was intended to… good thing I could usually kludge a way that wasn’t expected, at least in the early going.

  4. This game is looking fantastic. I would love to help with any creative aspects of the game such as ideas for level design, etc. Feel free to email me.

  5. well, the incredipede is very nice!,good luck for you, but…i want to know when the game ‘rebuild 2’ i going to be published…

  6. What would happen if you just ignored what everyone said? Just publish it and move on? I think that’s what most actors/writers/directors eventually decide.

To quote Tina Fey, “If you ever start to feel too good about yourself, they have this thing called the Internet”.

    1. That’s what I did last time. It just doesn’t feel like a good way to do it. I’m making this thing to bring people joy and it seems like a better route to engage with those people than to pretend they don’t exist.

      1. It’s definitely a slippery slope. Some creative people have engaged, and it’s worked out well for them (Jerry and Mike come to mind). Yet others seem to react and make a fool of themselves (Charlie Sheen anyone?)

I think it takes a special type of person to be creative, and an entirely different type of person to be interactive. Not to say you can’t do both, but good luck.
